Home > USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77)

PCU (Pre Commissioning Unit) George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) is the planned name of the tenth Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. It is the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for former President George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II.

Construction began in 2001 by Northrop Grumman's Newport News Shipbuilding. In December 2002, it was announced that the carrier would be named after the 41st President. The George H. W. Bush is to be the final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier constructed; her successor will be CVN-21. Christening is scheduled for March 2006 and delivery for March 2008. It is scheduled to be commissioned in 2009.

Very few ships of the United States Navy have been named for a person who was alive at the time of the christening; the list includes Carl Vinson (CVN-70), Arleigh Burke (DDG-51), Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-709), Bob Hope (T-AKR-300), and George H. W. Bush (CVN-77).
