At about 8am local time on 11 September 2003, Doyle received a request from the German frigate FGS Niedersachsen (F208) to allow a close pass to starboard. The crew of Niedersachsen rendered honors to the United States by manning the rail in their dress uniforms, their covers held over their hearts.
