UNIX Systems Laboratories or "USL" was originally organized as part of Bell Labs in 1989. USL joined with the UNIX Software Operation , also a Bell Laboratories division, in 1990. It assumed responsibility for UNIX development and licensing activies. It then became a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, formed, owned, and operated by American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, the parent company of Bell Telephone Laboratories.

In 1992 Novell purchased USL and all of the UNIX assets, including all copyrights, trademarks and licensing contracts.

USL was the plaintiff in the USL v. BSDi law suit initiated in 1992 UNIX Systems Laboratories against Berkeley Software Design, Inc and the Regents of the University of California over intellectual propertyIn law, intellectual property is a form of legal entitlement which allows its holder to control the use of certain intangible ideas and expressions. The term intellectual property reflects the fact that once established, such entitlements are generally tr related to UNIX. USL asked the court for a preliminary injunctionAn injunction is an equitable remedy in the form of a court order that either prohibits or compels ("enjoins" or "restrains") a party from continuing a particular activity. The party that fails to adhere to the injunction faces civil or criminal contempt that would bar BSDi and the UC Berkeley from distributing the NET-2 software until the case was concluded. USL v. BSDi was settled out of courtA settlement is a contract that is one possible result when parties sue (or contemplate so doing) each other in civil courts, usually seeking money as reparations for the alleged wrongdoing of the defendants. The plaintiff(s) and defendant(s) identified i 1993 after the judge expressed doubt as to the validity of USL's IPIP is an acronym for: Internet Protocol, the computer networking protocol used on the Internet intellectual property, a legal metaphor encompassing copyright, patent, trademark, and trade secret law instruction pointer, the computer processor ( CPU) regis.
