Tuktoyaktuk or Tuktoyuktuk formerly Port Brabant is a small Inuvialuit community located in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Tuktoyaktuk, also known as Tuk, lies in Arctic Circle along the Arctic Ocean close to Alaska.

3 History

Tuktoyaktuk means, "resembling a caribou", in Inuvialuit place-name meaning. Caribou are hunted in the fall by the Inuvialuit who also claim the areas reefs resemble caribou at low tide.

Local Legend

Local legend recalls a woman in a time when caribou were plentiful, that could petrify caribou simply by looking at them.

The Molson Ice Beach Party

On September 3, 1995 the tiny community hosted an impromptu concert promoted by the Molson Brewing Company dubbed "The Molson Ice Beach Party". Acts performing at the concert included Hole, Metallica, and Veruca Salt.

Mars

On August 9, 2004 the Mars %28planet%29 rover Opportunity, also known as MER-B, examined a patch of rocks dubbed Tuktoyaktuk. Opportunity used the rover's rock abrasion tool on a rock called " Inuvik". The Tuktoyuktuk patch on Mars is located in "Endurance Crater" in the region of Mars known as Meridiani Planum.
