Home > Tukaram

Tukaram lived in seventeenth century India, in the area now known as Maharashtra. Tukaram was a great devotee of the Hindu avatar Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, the supreme God in Vaishnavism. Tukaram, who was born to a low caste family and lived in a caste conscious world, taught that devotion was the sole criteria for God, not patrimony. He is said to have performed miracles during his lifetime, such as restoring speech to a dumb boy.
