Tomsk Oblast ( Russian: То́мская о́бласть) ( 2002 pop. 1,060,800) is a federal subject of the Russian Federation (an oblast). It lies in the southeastern West Siberian Plain, in the southwest of Siberian Federal District. The development of the territory which now belongs to the oblast began in the early 17th century. Tomsk itself was founded in 1604. Most of the oblast's 316,900 km² territory is inaccessible because it is covered with taiga woods and swamps. The oblast shares borders with Krasnoyarsk Krai, Tyumen, Omsk, NovosibirskNovosibirsk Oblast is a regional subdivision of Russia. Its administrative center is the city of Novosibirsk. Novosibirsk Oblast (area 178,200 km², pop. 2,748,500 est. 1995)) is located in the southeastern Western Siberian plain, at the foothills of low S, and KemerovoKemerovo Oblast ( 1995 pop. 3,077,900 est. often called Kuzbass after the Kuznetsk Coal Basin is located in southwestern Siberia, Russia, where the West-Siberian Plain meets the South Siberian mountains.
