The Swimmer is a 1968 film, directed by Frank Perry and starring Burt Lancaster as the main protagonist, Ned Merrill. The film is based on a story by John Cheever that appeared in The New Yorker Magazine.

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

In the film we find Merrill on a hill overlooking a chain of swimming pools, receding into the distance. He decides to swim in each pool toward his home. As he moves from pool to pool, we learn more about him and his life. The mood of the film darkens as he progresses across the landscape, interacting with his neighbors and revealing the wreckage of his life. The weather copies the mood of the film so that he is in a rainstrom when he finally arrives home.
