Vargas Sein grew as a pentecostal. He would later separate from that doctrine and join his adoptive mother, Juanita Garcia in the founding of a new religious group, the MITA group.
Originally, MITA had eleven ordained ministers, Aaron included. As the religion's congregation expanded, Aaron began to gain power as its leader. Eventually, the MITA congregation built centers in Colombia, Mexico and Spain, among other countries.
One of the MITA religion's laws was that no member could have children after joining the cult, and, in the case that new members already had children, no new children could be conceived. Aaron allegedly had a son in 1970, rumor which would later come back to haunt him.
By 1971, Aaron had gained enough power at the MITA organization, that he had another of the religion's leaders, Anibal Cardona Pastrana , as his right-hand man. Cardona Pastrana abandoned the religion during 1995, after the MITA organization allegedly discovered that he himself had been in contact with a son who had been conceived after his convertion into the MITA religion, and who lived in Orlando, Florida. Cardona Pastrana says that he received a telephone message from members of the religion on February 9February 9 is the 40th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar. The allegation was widely publicized by newspapers such as El Nuevo Dia and El Vocero, and by television channels.
On October 16 of that year, Benitez was interviewed by Luis Francisco Ojeda during Ojeda's WAPA-TV show. He told Ojeda that he and Aaron had contact when Benitez was a child, and that Aaron was a good father during Benitez's childhood, only requesting Benitez never to call him father in front of anybody, but often enjoying father and son moments, such as watching television together, reading or talking about life. Aaron allegedly abandoned Benitez when he became a young adult, and, according to Benitez, they have not spoken since.
After Benitez broke the scandal, other former members of MITA, such as Cardona Pastrana, came out and spoke about the alleged activities that went on behind doors at the organization. These activities allegedly include beating up members when they break one of the religion's rules. It is also said that Aaron sometimes referred to himself as "the Messiah" and other terms usually reserved for a God or an important mythological religious figure.
Aaron has not answered to any of the allegations against him and his organization.
