 Contents
Television Broadcasts Limited, commonly known as TVB, is the first wireless commercial television station in Hong Kong. Established on November 19, 1967 with only about 200 staff, it is one of the two free broadcast companies in Hong Kong and overwhelmingly dominates the market.

TVB is now the largest Chinese programme producer in the world, with a size of about 5,000 including contract artistes and staff in overseas subsidiary companies.

The current chairman is Run Run Shaw. It owns two channels in Hong Kong, PRC, namely TVB Jade and TVB Pearl. TVB Jade owns the largest audience shares in Hong Kong and is often referred to as simply TVB.

TVB reaches out to communities all over the world with its programs available in Canada, Australia, Mainland China and Singapore, amongst others. Its dramas are internationally acclaimed, and many of Hong Kong's top film and pop stars started their careers in TVB. Special TVB events such as the annual TVB Anniversary Celebration are broadcast to worldwide audience. TVB also runs talent programs such as the annual Miss Hong Kong pageant. Successful contestants are offered TVB contracts.

1 Local comments

Though TVB enjoys an overwhelming dominance on the market, its programm has often been criticised by TV viewers for bad taste, superficial, dullness, and lack of creativity. Its programmes are also accused of being strictly catered for tastes of housewives, and therefore, ignored the diverse interest of the population as a whole. Comments as such have been raised by many Hong Kong people. However, despite the criticisms, TVB continues to enjoy a chokehold on TV viewerships in Hong Kong.

TVB's financial support for making TV programme is also recognized as the strongest in the region.

In addition, TVB has an exclusive contract with apparently every local celebrity that strictly forbid them from appearing in other local TV programmes. Those who fail to comply will be "freezed" and banned from showing up in any popular programmes. The unfair competition is well known, but practice is taken for granted in Hong Kong.

The Music Awards by TVB is the biggest award for singers every year and gives out awards to the most popular singers, the top 10 pops and etc. It's widely said that TVB takes the awards to appraise those who are "loyal". Anti-Corruption Body, ICAC, has investigated the arrangement of the awards.
