The TOC protocol is a legacy communications protocol used by some third-party AOL Instant Messenger clients. AOL does not use the protocol in its own IM clients ( AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ) but provides the TOC protocol specification openly to developers in the hopes that they will use it instead of the proprietary OSCAR protocol they use themselves. The differences between the TOC protocol and the OSCAR protocol are in the supported features. OSCAR provides such functionalities as Buddy icons, file transfer, and advertising.
It is, however, less full featured than its OSCAR counterpart.
