3 Event Summary
After dropping back around the middle of the race, Grant Hackett put on a major spurt in the last 50m of the race in an effort to catch up with the race leader and world record holder, Ian Thorpe. In the end, however, he could not catch up with Thorpe, who won the race by just 26 hundredths of a second. At seeing that he had won the race, Thorpe was overcome with emotion. He had been disqualified from the Australian team for this event after a false start at the Australian Trials, and was only reinstated to the team after team-mate Craig Stevens stood aside for him.
4 Notes
The japanese swimmer Takeshi Matsuda broke the asian record for this distance in both the qualifying heats and the final.
