As distinct from the African region of the same name (usually shortened to the Sudan) the Republic of the Sudan (or just Sudan) is the largest country in Africa, situated in the northeast part of the continent. The capital is Khartoum. It borders Egypt to the north, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, Kenya and Uganda to the southeast, Congo and the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest.
