The name of Succasunna comes from the Leni-Lenape Indian word for "Black Rock", most likely due to the rich iron-ore deposits in the area. The town was established in 1740.
The Hercules munitions factory in Kenvil has had explosions in 1934 killing 6 people, 1940 killing 52 people, and in 1989 shattering windows.
United States Highway 46 and New Jersey State Highway 10 pass through the area. The Morristown & Erie Railway runs rail freight service through the area 2-5 times week on its High Bridge Branch .
