Home > Sublimation (physics)

Sublimation of an element or substance is a conversion between the solid and the gaseous phases of matter, with no intermediate liquid stage.

At normal pressures, most chemical compounds and elements possess three different states at different temperatures.

Carbon dioxide is a common example of a chemical compound that sublimates at normal pressures (see dry ice). Iodine is another example. Snow and other water ice also sublimate, though more slowly, at below- freezing temperatures. Naphthalene, which is a common ingredient in mothballs, also sublimes slowly. DyeA dye can generally be described as a coloured substance that has an affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied. The dye is usually used as an aqueous solution and may require a mordant to improve the fastness of the dye on the fibre. In contr-sublimation is also often used to print full- colorFor alternative meanings, see color (disambiguation). visual arts. Color (or colour is a sensation which (in humans) derives from the ability of the fine structure of the eye to distinguish three differently filtered analyses of a view. The perception of imageIn common usage, an image (from Latin imago or picture is an artefact that reproduces the likeness of some subject—usually a physical object or a person. Images may be two-dimensional (e. a photograph) or three dimensional (e. a statue). They are typicalls onto a variety of substrateThe word substrate can mean the following: In biochemistry, a substrate is a molecule undergoing a reaction, for which the presence of an enzyme lowers the activation energy. The substrate binds with the enzyme's active site, and the enzyme provides an als, including paperPaper is a thin, flat material produced by the compression of fibres. The fibers used are usually natural and based upon cellulose. The most common material is wood pulp from pulpwood (largely softwood) trees such as pines, but other vegetable fiber mater.

The opposite of sublimation is deposition.
