It was founded in 1639 and has a current population of over 49,000 living within its 18.7 square miles (48 km˛). It is bordered on the west by Bridgeport, Connecticut, on the north by Trumbull, Connecticut and Shelton, Connecticut, and on the east by Milford, Connecticut (across the Housatonic).
In 1939 one of the world's first successful commercial helicopters was developed in Stratford by Igor Sikorsky. His company, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is still the town's largest taxpayer.
