The Starfury's unique relationship between its center of mass and its engines enable them to make rapid pivoting turns to bring their weapons to bear on opponents in any direction, without having to change the vehicle's current direction of movement. For instance, in a dog fight when a pilot sees that there is an enemy tailing the ship to attack it, the pilot can almost instantly turn the fighter around on its axis to position its weapons toward the enemy to attack without having to shake the enemy's pursuit first.

Like all ships of their class on Babylon 5, although they can travel through Hyperspace, they cannot generate their own Jump Point to enter it, being forced to rely on other ships.

The fighter was originally designed solely for outer space duty, but later models have fold-out wings for rudimentary atmosphere flight. There was also a variant starfighter called a Thunderbolt which is designed with a fuselage hull to allow for capable flight both in and out of atmosphere.
