Splatbooks are sourcebook s devoted to a particular facet or fictional faction in a role-playing game. The term "Splatbook" came about from the dizzying array of sourcebooks published by White Wolf Game Studio for each of its World of Darkness games. The books were termed by series ( Tribe Books, Clanbooks, Kithbooks, Tradition Books and so forth), which led to the derivation of the term: The asterisk on a computer keyboard, when used as a wild card character, is often called a " splat": *book for Clanbook, Tribebook, Kithbook, "Tradbook", et cetera.

Other games produce similar products, such as the race- and character class-specific sourcebooks for Dungeons & Dragons or the numerous Codices for WarhammerWarhammer or Warhammer Fantasy is a fantasy setting created by Games Workshop, in which many games of that company are set, the best known ones being the Warhammer Fantasy Battle wargame, and the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay role-playing game. There is also and Warhammer 40,000Genestealer Warhammer 40,000 (informally known as "Warhammer 40K") is a tabletop miniature wargame, produced by the British gaming company Games Workshop. The first edition of the game was published in 1987. The man responsible for creating the original r, although the term "splatbook" is most directly associated with White Wolf's World of Darkness product line.

Splatbooks are alternately desired and reviled by gamerA gamer is, in a general sense, one who plays and enjoys games, but the term usually refers to computer games, role-playing games, trading card games,Wargamers (see paragraph on Board wargaming in Wargaming), or video games (see video game player).
