Historically, it was a better known as a major town on the route from Hobart to Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula. In 1872 the Sorell Causeway was opened, from the Cambridge direction, across Pitt Water to Sorell, stopping at Midway Point in the middle. This shortened the route considerably from the original road via Richmond. Today, Sorell is the junction point of the highway that takes the same route, the Arthur Highway .
The town of Sorell is part of the local government area, Municipality of Sorell. The town has a population of 3,200 (1991 census) and the municipal region a population of 10,941 (2001 census).
Marion Bay, on the municipalities' east coast, was host to the first Tasmanian Falls Festival on New Year's Eve in December 2003.
