 Contents
Slipknot is a nine-piece heavy metal music group from Des Moines, Iowa. Each member has a number: Sid Wilson - 0, Joey Jordison - 1, Paul Gray - 2, Chris Fehn - 3, James Root - 4, Craig '133' Jones - 5, Shawn 'Clown' Crahan - 6, Mick Thompson -7, and Corey Taylor - 8. Using different styles throughout their career, this band has become one of the most popular Nu metal bands in the world.

The band is noted for its image: the members wear matching boiler suits--sometimes with UPC barcodes printed on the suits--and each has a distictive mask. On their first major label album, each band member was referred to by first name and number only; the band members are far from secretive about their identities, however, and their full names were present on their second major label album.

Five members of the band have been photographed without masks: Vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root with their band Stone Sour, drummer Joey Jordison with his side-project Murderdolls, bassist Paul Gray, and Shawn Crahan through mugshots leaked through The Smoking Gun.

1 History

The group formed in 1995. Slipknot's first album Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat was self-released in 1996. The album sold rather well, and several major record labels became interested in the group.

The group began wearing masks after a rehearsal. On a whim one member donned an old rubber clownMemorial Day paradeA clown today is one of various types of comedic performers, on stage, television, in the circus and rodeo. Though not every clown is readily identifiable by appearance alone, clowns frequently appear in makeup, and costume as well as t mask he had owned for years, and "freaked out." The other members were inspired to wear masks as well.

Despite receiving little airplay, the album was successful, due mainly to word-of-mouth. Regarding the album, one reviewer wrote "You thought Limp BizkitLimp Bizkit is an American rock music band. Slipknot decided to take a break, and several bandmembers devoted their attention to side project s. Via the band's website, Taylor wrote that he'd rather the group broke up if they were being seen as "the next Gwar".[2] This lead to speculation that Slipknot was breaking up.

Taylor retracted his comment, and in late 2003, the group began recording with Rick Rubin, who had earlier produced most of Slayer's records.

Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses was released in 2004. Reviews were mostly positive, New Musical Express noted "At least two thirds of it is still comprised of head-spinning speed metal, but there are signs of genuine progression -- not to mention progressive rock -- from the off."
