It is the eastern neighbor of Helsinki and is located in the province of Southern Finland and is part of the Eastern Uusimaa region. The municipality has a population of 18,397 ( 2003) and covers an area of 366.75 kmē of which 2.65 kmē is water. The population density is 50.5 inhabitants per kmē.

The municipality is bilingual, with majority being Finnish and minority Swedish speakers.
