The Simputer is a small inexpensive handheld computer, intended to bring computing power to the masses of India and other developing countries. The device was designed by the Simputer Trust, a non-profit organization formed in November 1999. The word "Simputer" is an acronym for "simple, inexpensive and multilingual people's computer", and is a trademark of the Simputer Trust.

It uses an Intel StrongARM 206 MHz processor powered by three AA batteries, has 64 megabytes of RAM, 32 MB of flash memory and can use cheap removable smartcards, each able to hold 8KB of data. It includes text-to-speech software and runs the Linux operating system. Similar in appearance to the Palm PilotPalm Pilot was the name given to several early models of personal digital assistant manufactured by Palm, Inc. when it was a subsidiary of U. Robotics or 3Com). More recent models of PDA manufactured by Palm are not named Pilots due to name infringement l class of handheld computers, the touch sensitive screen is operated on with a stylusA stylus (plural: styli is a writing utensil. It usually refers to a narrow, elongated staff, similar to a modern ballpoint pen. Many styli are slightly curved to be held more easily. Etymology The word was borrowed from Latin stilus that was taken from a; simple handwriting recognitionHandwriting recognition refers to the ability of a computer to receive intelligible written input. The image of the written text may be sensed "off line" from a piece of paper by optical scanning ( optical character recognition). Alternatively, the moveme software is provided by the program Tapatap . The simputer, however, it must be noted is much more powerful than any available Palm PilotPalm Pilot was the name given to several early models of personal digital assistant manufactured by Palm, Inc. when it was a subsidiary of U. The Simputer specifications are released under an open distribution licenseA license or licence is a document or agreement giving permission to do something. The spelling license is usual in American English. In British English, licence is the noun form, and license is the verb, so a when a licensee has a licence they are licens called the Simputer General Public LicenseThe Simputer General Public License or the SGPL is an open source hardware distribution license drafted specifically for the purpose of distributing Simputers. As a license it has been loosely modeled on the GNU GPL but in substance it is very different. or the SGPL. The term free software refers to software which, once obtained, can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed. developers to port their applications to the simputer.

Pilot production of the Simputer started in September 20022002 is a common year starting on Tuesday (see link for calendar). 2002 was the first palindromic year since 1991 and the last until 2112. 2002 was also designated: International Year of Ecotourism and Mountains National Science Year in the United Kingdom. From 2004 onwards it is commercially available for $240.
