Shotgunning is a means of consuming a beverage (generally beer) very quickly, for the purpose of becoming intoxicated faster. It is a popular pastime among American college students.

To shotgun a canned beverage, a small hole needs to be cut on the side of the can near the bottom before the tab is pulled. Then, the drinker places the hole to his or her lips, tilts it rightsideup, and pulls the tab. The effects of gravity and the pressure change caused by pulling the tab will force the beer through the hole extremely quickly for the enjoyment of the drinker. Depending on the beverage and the way the technique is performed, a 12 ounce beverage can be consumed in well under a minute.
