Customs and regulations for shopping hours (times that shops are open) vary from country to country.

1 United States

In the U.S., shopping hours vary widely. Key variables are the size of the metropolitan area, the type of store, and the size of the store. In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, some drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24/7, while department stores and most other large retailers are open from 10 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week. Boutiques and smaller shops often close early at 5 or 6 PM, and may be closed one or two days per week.

In many smaller cities and rural towns, there are strong religious traditions that cause most retailers to stay closed on Sunday, and the few that are open may have reduced hours.

2 Netherlands

In the Netherlands each town has the evening of either Thursday or Friday designated as shopping evening. In most cases it is Thursday. Towns for which it is Friday include:

On regular evenings most shops close at 6 p.m., but supermarkets often at 8 or 9, sometimes 10 p.m. Many towns have one or more little supermarkets that are open until later in the evening, occasionally all night. 3 Shopping days

In some countries most shops are closed on Sundays. In Islamic countries some shops are closed on Fridays. In Israel many shops are closed on Friday evening and Saturday during daytime.

Each state in AustraliaAustralia is the sixth-largest country in the world (geographically), the only one to occupy an entire continent, and the largest in the region of Australasia. Australia includes the island of Tasmania, which is an Australian State. Its neighbouring count sets its own standard trading hours, but in most of the country the shops are open seven days a week for at least part of the day.

For some shops and other businesses Christmas Day is the only day in the year that they are closed.

In the US a shop may e.g. be open all days of the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and EasterEaster is generally accounted the most important holiday of the Christian year, observed March or April each year to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead (after his death by crucifixion; see Good Friday), which Christians believe happened at Sunday.

4 Ramadan

In Islamic countries shops may have special opening hours during RamadanRamadan or Ramadhan ( Arabic: ) is the ninth month of the Islamic year.
