The Shin Bet (in Hebrew, שב"כ "SHABAK" an acronym of "Sherut Bitahon Klali" שירות ביטחון כללי), is the Internal General Security Service of Israel.

The SHABAK duties are:

One of the Shin Bet's roles is to protect the lives of senior Israeli ministers and public servants (such as the president). The Shin Bet is also responsible for the prevention of funding of underground movements and terror groups whose members are Israeli citizens. It accomplishes this goal using interrogations and secret agents.

The Shin Bet is most known for its role in the conflict against those it considers Palestinian terrorists. The Shin Bet produces intelligence which enables the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to thwart suicide bombingA suicide bombing is a bomb attack on people or property, committed by a person who knows the explosion will cause his or her own death (see suicide). Historically the term has been used by Western media as far back as World War II in reference to the acts before they reach their destinations. Some consider the quality and quantity of the intelligence gathered by the Shin Bet among the best of the world's secret service agencies.

In November 2003 four former heads of Shin Bet, Avraham Shalom , Yaakov Peri , Carmi GillonCarmi Gillon is a former Israeli ambassador in Denmark and a former head of the SHABAK. He was sacked as the head of the SHABAK because of the failure of SHABAK to prevent the assisnation in Israeli prime-minister Izhak Rabin. He was highly criticized for and Ami AyalonAmi Ayalon is an Israeli former admiral and today, a peace activists. Ayalon served as an commander of the Israeli Navy and reached the rank of admiral. He later served as the head of the Shin Bet Israel's internal security service. On June 25, 2003, Ayal called upon the Government of Israel to reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians. [1].

Ami AyalonAmi Ayalon is an Israeli former admiral and today, a peace activists. Ayalon served as an commander of the Israeli Navy and reached the rank of admiral. He later served as the head of the Shin Bet Israel's internal security service. On June 25, 2003, Ayal, along with Palestinian professor Sari Nusseibeh, launched the National Census peace initiative.
