Shekhar Kapur is an Indian filmmaker. His works include the Oscar-nominated Elizabeth ( 1998), a semi-historical account of the early reign of Elizabeth I of England.

Future projects include Long Walk to Freedom , The Last Full Measure , and Golden Age, a sequel to Elizabeth. In September, 2004, Kapur announced tentative plans to make a major motion picture account of the life of the Buddha. The project would be funded by B. K. Modi , the president of the Maha Bodhi Society, India, and would feature script advice from self-help guru Deepak Chopra. Hollywood stars Richard Gere and Sharon Stone have expressed an interest in appearing in minor roles.[1]

Kapur is married to singer and actress Suchitra Krishnamurty .
