Sergey Lukyanenko ( Russian: Сергей Лукьяненко) (born April 11, 1968) is a relatively new and young science fiction and fantasy author, writing in Russian (none of his works have as of yet been commercially published in English, partually because Western publishers are apprehensive about the state of modern Russian copyright laws. However, that may soon change soon, see external links for details). He was born in Kazakhstan and educated as a psychiatrist. It is said that he has been heavily influenced by Robert Heinlein and Vladislav Krapivin in his writings. Sergey Lukyanenko is surpisingly tolerant of fanfiction, going as far as to incorporate some of the better fanfics into canon. A married and happy man he now lives in Moscow. The first Russian blockbuster Nochnoy dozor (Night Watch) was made based on his series. The film has grossed in Russia over 15 million dollars, beating every single Russian box office record in existance.
