The office of Secretary of State for India or India Secretary was created in 1858 when India was brought under direct British rule ( British Raj). It was the cabinet office responsible for the government of India. In 1935, the Burma Office was added; the same Secretary of State served both Departments, known as the Secretary of State for India and Burma.
