Its magic system differed greatly from any of the Seiken Densetsu games due to using alchemy ingredients to make spells. In many areas, rather than music the developers opted for ambient sound effects like various jungle noises or the sounds of a busy town market. While the characters and enemies for the most part are bright and colorful with a similar style to the Densetsu games, the environments are somewhat dull and dark. This creates somewhat of a clash.
The game is not multiplayer despite some reviews to the contrary experience. However, in February 2004, a patch has been made by the emulation community to enable 2-player experience.
Secret of Evermore is controversial within the video game community. The opinion on this game is divided with some finding it a terrible game while others find it a very great game. However, most fans agree that Seiken Densetsu 3 should have been released in the U.S. In 2000, Seiken Densetsu 3 was unofficially translated into English, French, and German through emulation.
The story of Secret of Evermore revolves around a boy and his dog. The boy and his dog are named by the player, but in manuals are referred to as simple The Boy and his Dog. The boy, who is a fan of old B horror films, is leaving with his dog from a matinee in a town called Podunk, USA. The dog, upon leaving the theatre, the dog begins to chase after a cat and they soon find themselves in a large mansion. When the dog begins to chew on some wires in a hidden labrotory, they soon find theselves transported to the mysterious world of Evermore.
Throughout the course of the game, the player finds themselved in 4 different areas of Evermore, each corresponding to different epochs of earth history, including Prehistoria (a prehistoric area with heavy jungle and cave men), Crustacia and Nobilia (an area with pirates, and a more romanesque area), Gothica (victorian era) and a futuristic area.
