Schuylkill County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 150,336.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,027 km2 (783 mi2). 2,016 km2 (778 mi2) of it is land and 11 km2 (4 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 150,336 people, 60,530 households, and 40,131 families residing in the county. The population density is 75/km2 (193/mi2). There are 67,806 housing units at an average density of 34/km2 (87/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 96.62% White, 2.09% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other racesThe United States Census Bureau uses the federal government's definitions of race when performing a census. The racial categories are officially described as follows:¹ The categories represent a s, and 0.43% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 60,530 households out of which 26.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 29.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.90% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.20 males.
