A scavenger is a type of animal that consumes already dead organic life-forms. Detritus feeders are animals that recycle decomposing organic material, returning it into the food chain. Many large carnivores that hunt regularly will scavenge if given the chance, such as hyenas and lions.
Well known scavengers include vultures, burying beetles, carrion beetles, blowflies, and racoons.
