Sanjan was an ancient city in Greater Khorasan a realm in northeastern Iran, in the vicinity of the historically eminent city of Merv. Sanjan's location in historical Greater Khorasan is at present a geographic part of Turkmenistan. Notwithstanding its present ethnical population, Sanjan and in particular Merv have for centuries been regarded as the cradle of the Arians, in the East, and the epitome of Persian culture. Sanjan must not be confused with the phonetically similar Iranian province ZanjanZanjan ( in Persian) is one of the 28 provinces of Iran. It is in the north-west of the country, and its center is Zanjan. Zanjan province has an area of 36,400 kmē and a largely rural population of 1. It is famous for its seedless grapes.
