The earliest Slavic state in the region was that of the Kievan Rus. Ancient Icelandic sagas and runestones call the Russian territory " Gardariki" (Land of cities), later on known by the names of Little Russia (= Ukraine) and Great Russia. According to these sagas the country was divided into three main parts: Holmgård ( Novgorod), Könugård ( Kiev) and Palteskja ( Polatsk). Kiev region was considered to be the best land in the whole country. The country outside these three parts was seen by the norsemen as Tatars' land. Exports of slaves, furs, honey and wax contributed to the growth of Kiev and Novgorod . The towns were competitors to the rest of Europe's large cities in size, wealth and architectural beauties.

In 988 the region adopted ChristianityChristian cross and its many variations are widely recognized as an ancient Christian symbol. Christianity is an Abrahamic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament. Although Christians generally chara by the official act of public baptism of Kiev inhabitants by St. Vladimir, and some years later the first code of laws, Russkaya PravdaWhile "Russkaya Pravda" is the common English spelling, and corresponds to the Russian usage, Ukrainian commentators and certain scholars outside Russia consider the spelling "Ruskaya Pravda", corresponding to the Ukrainian usage, to be more correct in te, was introduced. Compared with the languages of European Christendom, the Russian language was little influenced by the Greek and Latin of early Christian writings. This was due to the fact the Slavic was used directly in liturgy instead.

The name "Russia", together with the FinnishFinnish is spoken by the majority in Finland and by Ethnic Finns outside of Finland. It is one of two official languages of Finland. Finnish is a member of the Finno-Ugric language family and is an agglutinative language which modifies the forms of both n Routsi and EstonianThe Estonian language eesti keel is spoken by about 1. 101 million people, of which the great majority live in the Republic of Estonia. Estonian belongs to the Finnic branch of the Finno-Ugric languages. Estonian does not have any language-family relation Rootsi, are found by some scholars to have relationship with Roden . The meaning Rus is debated but it may come from ros in the placename "Roden" (now RoslagenRoslagen is the name of the coastal areas of Uplandia in Sweden, which also constitutes the northern part of the Stockholm Archipelago. Historically it was the name of all the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea, including the eastern parts of lake Malaren, b).
