The Rouse Company, founded by James Rouse in 1939 and publicly held since 1956, is a shopping mall and community developer. In 2004 it was sold to General Growth Properties Inc., another shopping mall developer. It built some of the first enclosed shopping malls, and it pioneered the development of festival marketplaces such as Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, South Street Seaport in New York, New York, and Harborplace in Baltimore, Maryland.

Its community projects include the Village of Cross Keys in Baltimore, and the planned cities of Columbia, Maryland (where it is headquartered), Bridgelands, Texas and Summerlin, Nevada . It is an investor in The Woodlands, Texas.

The Rouse Company has ceased to exist as of November 12th, 2004 at 5:03 PM EST.
