A rote, also called a crwth, is an ancient instrument, a variety of lyre. It often, though not necessarily always, had six strings. The rote was of Anglo-Saxon make, and has been found at the 7th century ship burial at Sutton Hoo. The Friar in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales played a rote.
