Home > Robert Leighton

Robert Leighton ( 1611- 1684), son of Dr. Alexander Leighton , was a Scottish prelate. A notable Presbyterian preacher, he signed Solemn League and Covenant in 1643. In 1661 he accepted the bishopric of Dunblane, and where he thereafter sought a basis for union of Presbyterianism and episcopacy. He died on the 25th of June, 1684, and was buried in Horsted Heynes , Sussex. In his will, he bequeathed his collection of 1,400 volumes and a hundred pounds for the erection of Leighton Library in Dunblane.
