Río Negro is a province of Argentina, located at the northern edge of Patagonia. The capital is Viedma. The province has a population of 552,822 (2001), and covers an area of 203,013 km². Neighboring provinces are from the south clockwise Chubut, Neuquén, Mendoza, La Pampa and Buenos Aires. To the west is Chile, to the east the Atlantic Ocean.Río Negro is home to towns like the beautiful San Carlos de Bariloche.
On July 27, 1955 Río Negro territory was elevated to a province.
The province is divided in 13 departments (spanish departamentos).
