He made several films in the new medium, most notably Only Angels Have Wings , but he failed to achieve the stardom of his silent film days and gradually left entertainment. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in World War IIWorld War II was the most extensive and costly armed conflict in the history of the world, involving the great majority of the world's nations, being fought simultaneously in several major theatres, and costing tens of millions of lives. The war was fough, served as a lieutenant commander, and never returned to film, preferring instead to live off of his investments. He died of cancer in 1963.
