Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), now known as National Institute of Technology Calicut, was formed in September 1961 as the ninth of its kind and the first one to be established during the Third Five Year Plan period by the government of India.

NITC is one of the premier institutions for technical eduction in India.

There are eighteen National Institutes of Technology in India, one in each major state.They have been established for fostering national integration by imparting technical education to students from all over India.

National Institute of Technology has a popular digital library NALANDA (Network of Automated Library AND Digital Archives) which houses a good collection of e-books and other resources.
