 Contents
The Raritan is a river in central New Jersey emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Raritan Bay. The name "Raritan"" comes from an Algonquin word meaning "stream overflows."

It is believed that the end of the last ice age, approximately 6000 years ago, the Narrows had not yet been formed and the Hudson River flowed along the Watchungs and out to the ocean through the current course of the Raritan.
