The town of Rakvere is situated in north Estonia on the northern foot of the Pandivere upland, 20 km south of the Gulf of Finland. The Tallinn - Narva - St. Petersburg railway runs through the town and the Tallinn - Narva - St. Peterburg highway is located just north of the town. The Rakvere - Pärnu highway begins in Rakvere. Rakvere is located 98 km from Tallinn, 181 km from Helsinki, 274 km from St. Petersburg, 364 km from Riga and 503 km from Stockholm.Rakvere is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of Lääne-Viru county. On March 31st 2000 there were 17,097 inhabitants in Rakvere. The area of the town is 10.64 km², of which 1.53 km² is a forest belonging to the town.
Rakvere is influenced by both continental and marine climate changes. The mean amount of precipitation is 750 mm and the mean yearly snowfall is 30 - 40 cm. The average temperature per year is 4.5 °C. The frosty days begin in December and last about 80 - 90 days.
