The population of Qiryat Yam is about 38,000 (2003) people, of whom about 20,000 arrived after 1990, following the large aliyah from the collapsing Soviet Union.
In a few years all of the HaQrayot should be united into one big city with a population of about 250,000 people, which will make it one of the ten largest cities at Israel.
There are about 10,000 pupils in Qiryat Yam, and three Junior+High schools named Rabin High School, Rodman High School and Levinson High School. There are also about eight elementary schools and 15 pre-schools.
The average Qiryat Yam income a month is about 4,500 NIS, (almost 2000 NIS below the national average).
In September of 2003 Shmuel Siso was elected mayor with an over 60% majority.
