Qarshi is a city in southern Uzbekistan. It is the capital of the Qasqadaryo province, covers about 28,400 km2, and has approximately 177,000 inhabitants ( 1994).

The city is at least 1000 years old. It was originally called Nakhshab. It was renamed in the 14th century, when a Turkish fort was built. The fort was named Karshi, the Turkish word for fort.
