Putnam County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. As of 2000, the population is 51,589. Its county seat is Winfield 6.
The county is bounded in the northeast by Jackson County, in the east by Kanawha County, in the south by Lincoln County, in the west by Cabell County and in the north and west by Mason County.
