Home > Pratt & Whitney JT3C

The Pratt & Whitney JT3C was a turbojet engine of the 1950s. It was in the 10,000 lb thrust class and was one of the first "two-spool" turbojet engines - two turbines turning at different speeds turned separate compressors. Such a configuration made the engine more efficient than the previous single-spool turbojets.

Early Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-8s were powered by the JT3C. Later on, the JT3C was modified into the Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofan engine. The JT3C engine was also used extensively in military aircraft under the designation J57. The Boeing B-52 heavy bomber was powered by eight J57 engines. Several American fighter aircraft such as the North American F-100 Super Sabre, the McDonnell F-101 and the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger were also powered by afterburning J57 variants.
