Home > Popples
Popples were characters in a Saturday morning cartoon by the same name that aired in the United States from 1985 to 1987. The 30-minute show was based on a series of toys created by American Greeting Cards and Mattel. Popples resemble brightly colored teddy bears with long tails tipped with pompoms. They had pouches on their bellies, and could tuck themselves into the pouches to make a sort of furry ball. The name "Popple" is a reference to the popping sound they make when unfolding themselves from such a ball. The Popples pulled a great variety of items (hammers, ladders, etc.) from their pouches in emergencies. The Popples lived in the attic of Billy and Bonnie, the two animated children who were also "stars" of the show. Unlike many similar cartoons, there were no evil villains to foil. Plots revolved around the children's efforts to hide the existence of the Popples from the adults around them.
