For many years the Catalina was the high volume series for Pontiac and in the '60s was often considered a performance car when properly equipped; as was the custom at Pontiac- nearly every engine & drivetrain combination was available on all model lines.
In the '70s, the car lost its pretensions to both power and luxury as the Bonneville became increasingly popular, and the Cat was marketed mostly as a capable but utilitarian line. It was in production through the 1981 model year.
