Foglio won two Hugo Awards for Best Fan Artist in 1977 and 1978. In the 1980s he wrote and illustrated a strip entitled "What's New?" for Dragon Magazine from TSR Games, satirizing the world of role-playing games. This exposure gained him considerable fame within the gaming community.
Around the same time, he illustrated the MythAdventures series of fantasy novels by Robert Lynn Asprin, and he also adapted the first volume of that series, Another Fine Myth into a comic book series from WaRP Graphics. This led to a variety of other work in the comics business, including comics from DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and First Comics, as well as his own work such as Buck Godot.
In the 1990s, he met and married his wife KajaKaja Foglio (b. 1970) is a Seattle-based writer, artist and publisher. She founded Studio Foglio, LLC in 1995 as a venue for her Magic the Gathering art prints, but quickly expanded into publishing. She co-writes the comic book Girl Genius with her husban. The two of them contributed art to the collectible card gameCollectible card games CCGs , also called customizable card games or trading card games are played using specially designed sets of cards. While trading cards have been around for much longer, CCGs combine the appeal of collecting and strategic game play. Magic The Gathering from Wizards of the CoastWizards of the Coast (often referred to as WotC or simply Wizards is a publisher of games, primarily based on fantasy and science fiction themes. Originally a basement-run role-playing game publisher, they popularized the collectible card game genre with (and resurrected "What's New?" for WotC's Duelist magazine). Foglio also co-founded Palliard Press and published additional comic books, including a new Buck Godot series and the whimsical erotic series Xxxenophile.
The Foglios later founded Studio Foglio and began to produce the retro-fantasy series Girl GeniusGirl Genius is a comic book series (ongoing) written and drawn by Phil and Kaja Foglio and published by their company, Studio Foglio LLC under the imprint Airship Entertainment. Girl Genius is set in an alternate history "where the Industrial Revolution b.
