The inmates of this dimension are cast into the dimension and reside in a featureless state of existence from which they observe, but cannot interact with, the regular dimension clearly. Inmates do not age or require sustenance in the Phantom Zone; furthermore, they are telepathic and mutually insubstantial.
As such, they survived the destruction of Krypton and focused their attention on Earth seeing as how most of the surviving Kryptonians now reside there. Most have a particular grudge against Superman seeing as how his father created the method of their own damnation. As such, they usually cause destructive trouble when they manage to escape while Superman struggles to return them to the Zone.
The only exception is Mon-El, a Daxamite youth who met Superman when he was Superboy on Earth and discovered he was acutely vulnerable to lead poisoning. To keep him alive, Superboy cast Mon-El, with his permission, into the Phantom Zone where he resided until the 30th century where Brainiac 5Brainiac 5 (Querl Dox) is a fictional character who exists in the future of the DC Comics universe. He is a member in long standing of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He is reputed to have a brain twice as powerful as a human ("12th level"; most humans have " of the Legion of Super-HeroesThe Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of comic book superheroes in the future. It is also the title of several comic books about the team published by DC Comics. The team has been closely associated with Superboy, and first appeared in Adventure Comics #24 developed a cure which allowed him to leave safely.
In the post-Crisis DC Universe, the Phantom Zone first appeared when Superman returned from space with a Kryptonian artifact called the EradicatorIn the DC Comics universe, the Eradicator is a 200,000 year old artifact and weapon. It first appeared in Action Comics Annual #2 ( 1989). In the distant past, a dying alien race created a number of devices to preserve their culture, and sent them into sp. This device, created by his ancestor Kem-L, attempted to recreate Krypton on Earth, building the Fortress of SolitudeFictional buildings The Fortress of Solitude is the occasional headquarters of Superman in DC Comics. Its predecessor, Superman's "Secret Citadel", first appeared in Superman #17, where it was said to be built into a mountain on the outskirts of Metropoli. The extradimensional space in which the Eradicator found the Kryptonian materials necessary was called the Phantom Zone.
A Phantom Zone Projector is part of Superman's current fortress. It has been used to access the Bottle City of KandorKandor is the name of a fictional Kryptonian city in the Pre-Crisis DC Universe that was shrunk and stolen by the supervillain, Brainiac from the planet Krypton. In his battle with the supervillain, Superman rescued the city and kept it in his Fortress of and to trap villains such as the White Martians .
The Phantom Zone has also been independently discovered by the Bgzlt ians, the White Martains and the villains Loophole, PrometheusPrometheus is fictional character from DC Comics and a Supervillain. His creator, Grant Morrison describes him as "the anti- Batman. Prometheus was the son of two criminals who travelled across America with him in tow committing indiscriminate murders and and Queen Bee , who call it the Buffer Zone, Still Zone, Stasis Zone, Ghost Zone and Honeycomb, respectively.
