Penobscot County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 144,919. Its county seat is Bangor 6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 9,210 km˛ (3,556 mi˛). 8,795 km˛ (3,396 mi˛) of it is land and 415 km˛ (160 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.51% water.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,274, and the median income for a family is $42,206. Males have a median income of $32,824 versus $23,346 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,801. 13.70% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.00% of those under the age of 18 and 11.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
