Patrick Volkerding is the founder and maintainer of Slackware Linux. Slackware users ("Slackers") often refer to him as "The Man" as a token of respect for bringing them what they believe is the greatest Linux distro out there.

For a short while Chris Lumens and others have assisted his work on Slackware, but for the last couple of years he is working alone again. Volkerding still manages to bring out new releases.

Volkerding earned a BS in Computer Science from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1993.

Volkerding has been fighting a chronic bacterial infection. On the morning of November 16, 2004, he posted a detailed account of his battle with Actinomyces ( Actinobacteria). He requested help from anyone who could give him information about his condition or help him obtain strong antibiotics. Currently Patrick is at the Mayo Clinic.
